RF Jammer Detection Awareness
A $200 RF jammer can knock out every Wi-Fi camera, cellular alarm, and smart lock in your home in seconds. Learn the symptoms and the fixes.
What a jammer does
A signal jammer transmits noise on the same radio bands as your devices, overwhelming their ability to receive a clean signal. A pocket-sized jammer ($150-$300 on the gray market) can take down:
- All cellular phones in ~70 meter radius
- Wi-Fi cameras and doorbells (they go offline, cloud storage stops)
- Cellular-backed alarm panels (no signal to the monitoring company)
- Bluetooth devices (smart locks, audio, key fobs)
- GPS receivers (vehicle trackers, navigation)
Owning a jammer is legal in the US. Using one is a federal crime (FCC Sec. 333). That doesn't stop criminals — and it doesn't stop the attacks they've already used jammers to commit.
Symptoms you may have been jammed
A jamming attack is silent by definition — the goal is for nothing to register. The telltale pattern:
- Multiple wireless devices fail at the exact same moment (cameras offline, phone shows "no service," Wi-Fi disconnects, BT headphones drop)
- The failure clears as soon as a vehicle or person leaves your area
- No outage notification from your ISP, cell carrier, or alarm company
- Cellular-backed alarm panel showed "communication loss" on the panel during the incident but no "loss" notification was received by the monitoring company
What a jammer cannot defeat

The realistic defense plan
Required (do this)
- At least one wired camera (PoE, local DVR) covering each ingress point — front door, back door, garage interior. Wired cameras survive every jamming attack.
- Mechanical-only locks on the door from garage to house and on any safe.
- Wired smoke / CO detectors with battery backup. Wireless smoke alarms can be jammed during a fire.
Recommended
- Cellular-backed alarm with anti-jam detection. Some panels detect jammed signal and trigger local siren + light immediately. Ask your alarm provider — newer panels (Honeywell Lyric, DSC PowerSeries Neo with PowerG) have this.
- A non-Wi-Fi escape route for 911 calls. Old corded telephone on a POTS line, satellite messenger (Garmin inReach, Apple Emergency SOS), or wired ethernet to a VoIP handset.
- Vehicle trackers with both GPS and inertial sensors. The inertial data lets the tracker reconstruct movement after GPS recovers.
Nice to have
- A consumer SDR (HackRF, $300) or a jamming-detector app on a software-defined radio receiver to confirm jamming if you suspect it. Most people don't need this; it's useful as forensic evidence if you do.
What to do if you think you were jammed during an incident
- Preserve everything: local camera footage, alarm-panel log files (request from your alarm company), router logs, ISP modem-status logs
- Call your alarm-monitoring company and request the full communication log for the time window
- File an FCC complaint at https://consumercomplaints.fcc.gov — the FCC takes jammer use seriously
- File a police report — and specifically mention "RF jamming" so the investigating officer treats wireless evidence as suspect
Things commonly misunderstood
- "I have 5G — it's stronger" — 5G uses higher frequencies that are
actually more vulnerable to jammers, not less
- "I have a backup battery" — backup batteries protect against power
loss, not against RF noise
- "I have a Wi-Fi mesh" — mesh helps with coverage, not with jamming;
every node uses the same Wi-Fi bands
