Can I use MD5 for passwords or signatures?

No. MD5 has been broken since 2004 — collisions can be constructed in minutes on a laptop. Use SHA-256 for integrity checks, bcrypt/argon2 for passwords.

Why is this tool here then?

Legacy checksums. Many old installers, download pages, and hardware vendors still publish MD5 next to their files. This lets you verify those.
